[Governance] Fake News Draft Bill - International Solidarity Letter

To be honest the companies that are seen as enabling fake news typically don’t crack down too hard on it due to political pressures exerted on them.

A law with a clear definition of fake news and it’s harms, and clearly laid down, unbiased penalties for these would empower, not just incentivise, social media and messaging providers to more effectively mitigate this issue on their platforms.

Subject: [Governance] Fake News Draft Bill - International Solidarity Letter

Dear all,

Hope this email finds you well and apologize in advance for sending it on a saturday.

But as some of you know, Brazil is back to discussing its Fake News Draft Bill and the text should be voted on tuesday. While this version is somehow different from the one we called attention to a few years ago, it is still a text that could allow the country to advance a lot on setting proper limits to the abuses of big tech companies and sets a good ground on transparency and due process requisites and so on.

Some Civil Society organizations wrote an international solidarity Open Letter titled "Protecting Against Harm: International Organizations Stand in Solidarity with Brazil to Hold Big Tech Accountable" and we would very much welcome signatures on it. Our time for mobilizing more support around this bill is rather sensitive due to the fact that some far right movements - alongside big tech companies - have been spreading a lot of lies about the text itself, buying ads online and targeting Internet users all over the country in an attempt to block this regulation.

The Open letter can be read - and signed - here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zQoewXRJsg_T8C0jZYjBraVGVSX-xgElD3ltI8C0R80/edit - and im also attaching the latest version of the Draft Bill for broader knowledge (:

Best,
--
