Dear Colleagues,
1. I thought it would be good to initiate discussion on collaboration on
engagement of the IGC in diverse spaces.
2. Some suggestions include discussing engagement across the diverse
National and Regional IGF initiatives to see who is doing what. There are
some excellent initiatives that have surfaced from diverse regions, one
example from the IG MENA region is their internet legislation atlas, see
here <https://internetlegislationatlas.org/>. APC in Asia is also
developing a database of ICT laws.
3. It would be great to see who is doing what so as to encourage greater
collaboration.
4. Notably, there were no nominations from the IGC to the IGF
Secretariat on IGF 2020 nominees so this is perhaps something that future
coordinators can lock into their calendar.
5. Notably the Internet Rights and Principles which was developed by the
Internet Rights and Principles Dynamic Coalition is being picked up by some
regulators around the world.
6. To this end, it would be great to see how the IGC is involved in the
various Dynamic Coalitions and Best Practice Forums. Members of the IGC are
members of some of these in their individual capacity but it would be great
to see the IGC publishing statements and contributing to the work in these
IGF intersessionals.
7. It would also be great for the IGC to take part in the WTO or at
least submit consensus statements particularly in the area of E-commerce as
some of the rules being debated within the last 3 years will affect aspects
of internet governance. There are some members who are active in the space
who can provide updates.
8. The World Economic Forum is another Forum where it would be good for
the IGC to send representatives to participate within the Forum.
9. It would also be great to see a unified response or statement by the
IGC on Women's Economic Empowerment. Notably, when the UN Secretary General
then convened the High Level Panel on Women's Economic Empowerment in 2016
which following with a fact finding mission, public consultations and a
Report, they had made recommendations which are being rolled out three
years later.
10. As a matter of update, within Asia Pacific, through the generous
funding of the Canadian Government, initiatives in ICT development, women's
economic empowerment are being rolled out. Currently consultations are
taking place on training needs assessments for the purposes of training
public policy officials across various government ministries. So it would
be great to see other "gender" initiatives globally.
11. Strategic capacity building initiatives around the area of internet
governance, such as the Summer Schools on Internet Governance around the
world, ISOC, ICANN, Diplo Foundation etc.
12. The listserv used to be a place where people shared interesting
developments happening in their part of the world and it is time we moved
towards that again.
13. At some point when we have built capacity, it may be worthwhile
exploring having virtual notice boards and updates from around the world
where people can send what is most relevant or interesting and this be
consolidated and featured or a twitter # that can be aggregated to the new
website which brings me to the next point, which is the creation of the
website and starting simply by hosting archived content including Charter,
members etc.
14. The invitations for the 2019 Paris Peace Forum are also out.
15. That's all for now, be good to hear others thoughts.
