Non-profit only means that profits, money left over after costs are
accounted for, aren't distributed to shareholders et al as dividends
etc. but are retained for the corporation's activities. There is a
notion of excess retentions in the tax laws.

It doesn't mean that goods or services are sold at cost or whatever
seems to be implied here.

Tax-free status is of course more complicated. Any company can be
tax-free, just don't make a profit. One of the easier goals in the
corporate landscape. I realize "tax-exempt" was intended.
