It is, because as you noted, even normally-sighted people have problems 
knowing which way to insert cards.

Well at least that's consistent with denying that the current embossing 
is a very good indication of which way up the card is.

I can see why cutting a corner off the card would cause all sorts of 
problems with card-handling apparatus.

Are you really sure a Braille marker on that corner you'd otherwise have 
cut off isn't a suitable proxy?
