It is not only a matter of price but also of the ability to pay in
local currency (US dollars can be difficult to obtain in many
countries) and with local means (cash, because not everyone in the
world has a credit card).

Also, for the country as a whole, paying a local company (instead of
an US-based gTLD registry) means less outgoing flow of hard currency.
