The most significant waste of resources and attention happens when
well-meaning people on a mailing list start taking people like Joe
and Jim seriously, or start fighting them.

Don't do that.  Don't respond to them.  Ignore them.  They'll go
away some day.  If you do respond to them (or try to kick them off a
mailing list), they've already won.
