Dear Sala,

Yes, sure the panel did not aim at being exhaustive, representing the full spectrum of GS views, which are obviously much more complex. The purpose was to start a discussion with some examples. We will continue the discussion in some weeks with the BRICS perspective and there will be more, coming soon https://law.yale.edu/yls-today/yale-law-school-events/governing-conversations-brics-cybersecurity

Again, please bear in mind that this specific initiative is a 1hour webinar. We are all fully aware it would take a 1month conference to start having a picture of GS heterogeneity. Unfortunately, this is not feasible 🙂

All the best
Luca

Wonderful Luca although looking at the lineup wouldn’t say they were speaking for the Global South but for Brazil and Egypt as the South is so much wider than the perspectives of the panelists.

Cybersecurity in the Global South (21 July) 11:00 BRT (GMT-3)

https://law.yale.edu/yls-today/yale-law-school-events/governing-conversations-cybersecurity-global-south

This webinar aims at fostering debate of cyber norms, approaches and tools beyond the Global North narratives, with the ambition to explore the perspective of Global South stakeholders. Cybersecurity is central in international cooperation in the cyber domain, however, to strengthen a coherent and inclusive transnational governance approach in this field, particular attention should be paid on the fast-changing internet geography. Given that most of internet users are now located in the Global South, it is crucial to enhance a dialogue beyond Western-centric perspectives, and empower governments, business, and civil society actors from the Global South to play a key role in this debate.

By focusing mainly on low-income and middle-income-country perspectives, this webinar will aim at distilling relevant teachings and policy suggestions that may be useful for all stakeholders alike, regardless of their country of origin.

Speakers:

  * Vanessa Copetti Cravo, Telecommunications Regulation Specialist & Member, Cybersecurity Technical Group of the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency - ANATEL
  * Mohamed Chawki, Senior Judge, Council of State of Egypt; Chairman, International Association of Cybercrime Prevention
  * Andrea Calderaro, Director, Centre for Internet and Global Politics

Cybersecurity in the BRICS Countries: norms, institutions, and international cooperation

Speakers will discuss the increasing relevance of cybersecurity for the BRICS countries, the recent national policymaking developments occurred in this area at the BRICS level, and the recent calls from BRICS leaders to enhance cooperation on cybersecurity matters.

The 2021 BRICS Summit Declaration enshrined the bloc’s five members pledged to pursue enhanced cooperation on cybersecurity issues, including by “establishing legal frameworks of cooperation among BRICS” and exploring the development of a BRICS intergovernmental agreement on cybersecurity.
