Dear all,

This year, 28 January is a very special day, not only for the Council of Europe, but for the entire global Data Protection community, for each and every individual protected by this essential right.

This year, 28 January marks the 40th Anniversary of Convention 108, which was open for signature on 28 January 1981. It is also the 15th edition of Data Protection Day.

For 40 years, Convention 108 has influenced and shaped the protection of privacy and of data protection in Europe and beyond. Its modernised version (known as Convention 108+) will continue to do so.

A series of events will mark this outstanding date:

·       a conference under the German chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on Transborder transfers - Challenges of international data transfer from the perspective of the Convention 108+ and GDPR – 28 January 2021, 01.00 pm -4.30 pm CET (more information here<https://www.bmi.bund.de/SharedDocs/termine/EN/veranstaltungen/convention108-en/veranstaltung.html>)

·       three regional conferences to take stock of the input of Convention 108 in the world. You are most welcome to take part in them. See below for time and connection links:

40 members of the Data Protection Community in the world have recorded Happy Anniversary messages, emphasizing how Convention 108 is important for their respective country or organisation and their work. Be ready to witness their energy and get inspiration from this global community (video to be released on the 28th).

The Council of Europe provides you also with a yearly opportunity to be informed of the wealth of activities carried out to celebrate Data Protection Day in various countries and organisations participating in the Committee of Convention 108. Cette année, le 28 janvier est une journée très spéciale ; pas seulement pour le Conseil de l’Europe, mais pour toute la communauté internationale de la protection de données et surtout, pour chaque personne protégée par ce droit essentiel.

Cette année, le 28 janvier est le 40ème anniversaire de la Convention 108, ouverte à la signature le 28 janvier 1981. C’est aussi la 15ème édition de la Journée de la protection des données.

40 membres de la communauté de la protection de données dans le monde ont enregistré des messages de Joyeux Anniversaire qui traduisent combien la Convention 108 est importante pour leur pays ou organisation respectif. Voyez leur énergie et laissez-vous inspirer par cette communauté mondiale (La vidéo sera publiée le 28 janvier).

Le Conseil de l’Europe vous offre aussi, chaque année, une occasion de voir la richesse d’activités organisées pour célébrer la Journée de la protection des données dans différents pays et par différentes organisations qui participent au Comité de la Convention 108.
