Just curious, is there anybody on this list who *doesn't* use
any IM in addition to email?
I use Signal, Wire, WhatsApp, Telegram, Skype and even FB Messenger
fairly regularly and a bunch of others occasionally, and I have no
trouble picking up additional communication platforms as need be, old
man though I am. I don't believe for a moment that young people
couldn't learn to use email if they wanted to.
IMs and email are different tools for different purposes. Anyone,
young or old, insisting on the use of only one or the other will miss
out some things.
That said, I've no objections to exploring how various IMs or other
new platforms and media could be used to complement email use in our
work. But for the foreseeable future, anyone who wants to seriously
participate will have to learn to use email as well.
