In the US, non-profits have owned commercial businesses for a long
time.  There's nothing new about it.  The one people here are likely
most familiar with is the Mozilla Foundation which owns the much
larger Mozilla Corporation, but there are plenty of others like the
Hershey Trust which owns most of the Hershey candy company and uses
the income to run schools for orphans and other disadvantaged
children.
