That is correct. At least there are three universities in Kenya, East
Africa that use the .edu prefix, that is www.cuea.edu,
www.strathmore.edu and www.usiu.edu

Imagine you are using non Latin/Roman script, would you still want to
use .edu? That is why IDNs have been a big topic in resent Internet
Governance campaigns.
