Greetings,
We should support workshop 70 and make sure that they are green lighted.
See description below.
Workshop 70: Policy, governance and participation: Harnessing all
aspects of the net for youth activism
Globally, youth activists are increasingly turning to online platforms
and social media as means for initiating and organizing social action.
However, along with the enabling factors, youth activists find numerous
barriers to entry in participation in social media. They often find that
norms, local laws, and international treaties hinder open participation
in these media platforms when it comes to social, political, and
cultural activism. The variety or rules and regulations that may govern
the same social media platform in different parts of the world creates
great confusion. Differences in quality of communication infratructure
and inequality in the level of online skills add another tear of
complexity when it comes to efficient utilization of social media in
youth activism.
Multi-stakeholder initiatives like the Global Network Initiative are
working to create broad standards for online platforms. Numerous NGOs
are acting to bridge the access and the skills divides. But what else
can be done? This workshop will discuss the various ways in which social
media can be used to increase transparency and ways in which youth
activists, can evoke change using such platforms. It will bring together
social media professionals and youth activists to discuss ways to
encourage youth participation and will hear from the youth themselves
about how they use and would like to use social networks, blogs, and
other social media for creation of positive change.
