Indeed, but that still doesn't make the alternatives more useful
or practical for most if not all users.
You could argue that ICANN knows this, that the inertia of the existing
system makes it very hard to come up with an alternative (and rightly
so -- it works very well as it is), but then that wouldn't be anything
new, would it ? You might even go further and say that the reason why
ccTLDs are strongly encouraged to enter a contract with ICANN is that
it helps ICANN add much needed support to its questioned legitimacy.
And I wouldn't argue.
So no, no source of power, or legal authority, can deny existence of
these roots. And ?
