governmental practices, that’s a legitimate and real concern,” Chester
says. “Companies like Google and Facebook are placing the lives of
advocates who work in countries with totalitarian governments at risk. You
want to minimize data collection, not maximize it.” Facebook received over

from governments for account data in the second half of last year alone.
The company says it only responds to “valid requests relating to criminal
cases.” And while Facebook has not suffered a serious data breach that we
know of, its trove of personal information would make it invaluable to
hackers.
