This is an excellent topic, thoroughly explored by top experts, briefly at the event and in detail in the accompanying book, which can be previewed here . [image: digitized labor] On *September 21 2018* at *13:00 EDT/17:00 UTC* the *Internet Society Livestream Channel * will restream *The Future of Employment in the Digital Economy * – a conference that took place at Columbia University on Sep 7 2018. A critical issue facing the US economy is the transformative effect of the internet on the nature of work and employment. There is growth, innovation, productivity rise, and price reductions. But there is also offshoring, disruption, automation, squeeze of retailing, and others. These shifts have been exacerbated by new technologies and have affected the 2016 US Presidential campaign. This conference – a joint event of the Columbia Business School and Columbia School of International Public Affairs – began with the unveiling of a new book, *Digitized Labor: The Impact of the Internet on Employment * which addresses these topics, e.g. *Is the Internet a net creator of jobs? What are the impacts on income distribution? How are job profiles changed by the digital economy? What models can facilitate adjustment without slowing innovation?*Speakers, who included several of the book’s contributors, were *Linda Bell*, Provost, Barnard College; *Robert Cohen*, Fellow, Economic Strategy Institute; *Haig Nalbantian*, Senior Partner, Mercer Workforce Sciences Institute; *Eli Noam*, Professor of Economics, Columbia Business School; *Lorenzo Pupillo*, Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels; *Raffaella Rumiati*, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the School of Advanced Studies of Trieste, Italy; *Vincenzo Spiezia*, Head of the Information and Communication Technologies Unit of the DSTI at the OECD; *David Viviano*, Chief Economist, SAG-AFTRA (Labor Union); *Leonard Waverman*, Dean, DeGroote School of Business, Canada; and *Robert Atkinson*, President, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. *View on Livestream: https://livestream.com/internetsociety/employment Twitter: #digitizedlabor https://bit.ly/digitizedlabor * *Permalink* https://isoc.live/10526/ -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Joly MacFie 218 565 9365 Skype:punkcast -------------------------------------------------------------- - -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They should write to me (suryad at cityu.edu.hk) by Friday evening. Thanks in advance! Should I add your name? pl let me know. Best Surya Dear all As you may know, an open-ended intergovernmental working group (OEIGWG) on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights - established by the UN Human Rights Council in June 2014 - is currently negotiating an international legally binding instrument: https://www.ohchr.org/EN/HRBodies/HRC/WGTransCorp/Pages/IGWGOnTNC.aspx The fourth session of the OEIGWG is scheduled for 15-19 October 2018 to discuss a zero draft of the proposed instrument as well as its optional protocol. I along with a few other scholars have drafted an open letter to states. Please see the attached letter. It makes three points: (i) that an international legally binding instrument is needed to complement existing regulatory initiatives at national, regional and international levels; (ii) that the zero draft of the proposed instrument as well as the optional protocol provides a concrete basis for states to negotiate in good faith; and (iii) that there is sufficient legal basis to hold further sessions (including the Fourth Session) without a new resolution of the Human Rights Council. We are inviting scholars from all the over world to join this open letter to states to be released on Monday, 1 October 2018. If you would like to sign the letter, please send an email to me - mentioning your name and your institutional affiliation - latest by Friday, 28 September. Kindly do not publish or post the letter before 1 October. You may though circulate within your networks to collect signatures. Apologies in advance for cross-posting. The Nomcom had it tough to come to an agreement of the following candidates in accordance with the MAG criteria. It's worth noting that we received a good number of applications with relevant experience that can do well on the MAG. Please find in alphabetical order the people that would be nominated by the Civil Society Coordination Group.
